Enkhbold Togmidshiirev / Asia Triennial Manchester 11
26 September – 9th October 2011
The International 3 is pleased to announce that from 26th September – 9th October, as part of Asia Triennial Manchester 11, we will be working with artist Enkhbold Togmidshiirev from Mongolia.
PRESS RELEASE
Raised in a nomadic family Enkhbold moved to the Mongolian capital city Ulaanbaatar in 1998 to study. Using his own scaled down, self-built version of a ger; the mobile circular living structure traditionally used by nomadic Mongolian families, Enkhbold uses performance to explore geographic and contextual shifts.
During his two week residency project hosted initially by The Manchester Museum and then by Islington Mill, Enkhbold will move his ger from site to site using performance to reveal and reflect on his heritage, its culture and traditions in relation to the specifics of the circumstances in which he finds himself.
Whilst in the U.K., Enkhbold will also participate in ‘Bare House Project’ at Zanabazar Fine Arts Museum, Ulaanbaatar by sending video documentation of his residency for inclusion in the exhibition. Curated by Annu Wilenius, ‘ Bare House Project’ is an international exhibition and publication project that comments on the built environment, reflecting upon the past and present ideals of modern society through different traditions and experiences around the world. Enkhbold has performed his Ger Project in a number of locations including Pori Art Museum in Finland and Kaus Australis in Rotterdam. His participation in Asia Triennial 2011 will be the first incarnation of this project in the U.K.
Enkhbold (born 1978 in Uvurkhangai province) graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts, Ulaanbaatar in 2005, where he now has a teaching post. In addition Enhkbold is also a member of the Blue Sun Group. Founded in 2002 the Blue Sun Group is an artists group that aims to support emerging artists and alternative art practices. The initiative has a studio complex and a gallery space in Ulaanbaatar city centre.
Enkhbold’s two week residency project is co-commissioned by The International 3 and SHISHA.
