PRESS RELEASE
A DISCREET MUSIC / Evi Grigoropoulou / Tim Machin / Sarah Sanders
A Discreet Music brings together recent work by three artists currently based in Manchester. For A Discreet Music Sarah Sanders is showing several numbered drawings from 2007 made using lipstick, Vaseline, foundation powder and nail varnish on A1 paper. The sensitive and deeply melancholic nature of these drawings confounds any simplistic political position that the drawing materials might suggest. Each drawing attempts to capture a sense of the figure seen in passing or half imagined, framing them in the isolation of the empty space of the paper.
Tim Machin presents Birds (2007) an entire wall scattered with tiny silhouettes of birds in flight, each one carefully scalpeled from a guide book for British birds for identification by the land locked twitcher. The gallery wall becomes an endless sky with a distant flock of varying shapes and sizes from every species soaring above.
With Semi-precious (2007) Evi Grigoropoulou takes worthless objects and makes them semi-worthless. Pebbles, picked up from different beaches, are painted to look like semi-precious stones. Stones such as these, though beautiful, cost a minimal amount in a museum or tourist shop, and the time and effort the artist has put in to create these simulacra seems, from an economic point of view, pointless. Yet since they are now exquisitely realised art objects their potential value is unknowable.
Sarah Sanders was born in Bridgnorth, Shropshire in 1977 and gained an MA Fine Art from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2007. She will be showing as part of artranspennine 08. Evi Grigoropoulou born 1978 in Kalamata, Greece, graduated in 2005 from Manchester Metropolitan University and is currently involved in Centrifuge, a cross-regional project with twenty artists, curators and writers from across the North of England.
Tim Machin graduated from the Ruskin School of Fine Art, in 1999 and obtained an MA from Wimbledon School of Art in 2002. Recent exhibitions include: aspex, Portsmouth (2007); LOT, Bristol (2005); f a Projects, London (2005).
